Laxmi Eye Bank was built to address the problems of Corneal Blindness through an
active eye bank movement way back in 1996. It is the only eye bank in the entire
Konkan region. Till March 2012, more than 600 Corneal Transplantshave been
successfully performed. Our healing eyes are never shut. We aren't just banking
with eyes. We're banking with kindness.

Nearly 70% of the total population in the region where we work in rural and 40% below
poverty line. It is the eye of the storm. Inadequate medical facilities are the norm and
people are required to walk great distances for basic eye care. We were disheartened to
see this situation and established our long term eye check up camps and outreach
programmes way back in 1996.

Our team explored the region and worked relentlessly with medical and paramedical
experts in the remote corners of Raigad & Thane districts. Patients who required further
treatment were transported to the base hospital at Panvel. All this was done free of cost.
And the tradition continues to this day. we aim to move ahead.

At the present moment we are involved in several international and national clinical
studies, phase trials and publications. This activity will be taken to a newer level.

Includes procuring of Land, Building and setting up of Tretiary Eye Care Hospital. In the first
phase the hospital shall be equipped with subspecialities like Cornea, Cataract, Glaucoma,
Squint, Refractive Surgery, Contact Lens, Vitreo-Retinal department and an Eye Bank. The
hospital shall lay a special emphasis on the eye diseases of children. Regular outreach programs
and setting up vision centres throughout the district will be an integral feature of this phase.

The speacilized centres like Uvea, Oculoplasty, Neuro-Ophthalmology and Ocular Oncology
will be set up in this phase.

Training, Research and Development will be core part of this phase.

In this phase a Centre for Sight Enhancement is to be set up. We shall also be setting up a school
for the blind.
