The idea of a charitable trust was born out of the necessity of providing quality eye care to sections of the rural population who don’t have access to any primary eye care facility & who have to travel long distances out of their villages to consult even a primary eye care provider-leave alone an ophthalmologist.
It was disheartening to see that much of this medically-deprived population comprised of young school children - who wouldn’t have normal visual & personal development without early diagnosis & treatment of their ocular problems; adults in the productive phases of their lives - who are unaware or ignorant of the advancements occurring in the field of ophthalmology and who would have wasted their most productive years in the realms of darkness; and senior citizens in the twilight zone of their lives who are dependent on their children and relatives, both economically & socially.
A little deed in the form of affordable eye care would transform the lives of many of these visually- deprived individuals – from the depths of darkness to the lights of self-reliance.
In the backdrop of this situation, the concept of Laxmi Charitable Trust was established in the year 1999 by Dr. Suhas Haldipurkar & Mrs. Jayanti Haldipurkar to provide comprehensive, affordable and quality eye care services to the most needy – at their doorsteps, to start an Eye Bank, to educate Ophthalmologists in modern surgical techniques in Ophthalmology, to train and prepare paramedical workers in eye care so that they would be of assistance to eye surgeons involved in community eye services and to help the country in its march towards achieving the goal of "Vision 2020".
