The Background:
Laxmi Eye Bank is one of the major eye banks in Maharashtra and the sole functioning Eye Bank in Raigad district and Navi Mumbai area. We, at Laxmi Eye Bank, are committed to the cause of eliminating corneal blindness which is a major cause of avoidable / curable blindness in India.
Corneal blindness affects more than 11 lakh patients in India and approximately 25,000 more are added to this list every year. It can be treated by performing a Corneal Transplant in which a healthy Cornea (transparent magnifying lens like part of the human eye) from a deceased donor is transplanted to a recipient patient thus allowing him to see again. This is the only solution in most of the cases and hence there is a need for more Eye Donations.
Last year close to 50,000 eye donations, from dead donors, were collected in the whole of India. It is grossly inadequate to cure the 11 lakh patients waiting for a transplant. This wide gap in the demand and availability is due to lack of awareness and reluctance about Eye Donation.
Laxmi Eye Bank, through its various activities, endevours to increase the awareness about corneal blindness, eye donation and corneal transplanting. We celebrate the Eye Donation Awareness Fortnight in the last week of August and first week of September and this PhotoGraphics Contest is a part of the same.
We invite the Shutterbugs to join our cause by capturing the beauty of the world around us in a photograph which can then be used as tool to make normal people aware that there are many who cannot enjoy these sights. Thus, we wish to infuse in them a sense of responsibility, awareness and acceptance towards Eye Donations. We also look forward to some hard hitting photographs depicting the social impact of blindness.
Graphics designers and illustrators can lend their creative services to this noble cause by making visually impactful posters which address the issue related to Eye Donation. And of course!! There are exciting prizes to be won….So what are you waiting for?
